Matthew Corey, Republican candidate for U.S. Congress (CT-1), released a statement about John Larson's federal tunnel plan.

"The massive federal tunnel project has caught the attention of business and community leaders, and most important - trade union leaders. Why now, when Hartford is going bankrupt and the state looms in its own fiscal crisis? I'll tell you why: It's an election year and the current congressman, John Larson, is pandering to voters. The business community and citizens have been talking about connecting the river to the city for years. We are one of the only capital cities with a major river that doesn't utilize their riverfront to its full potential. The reasons why he would come up with this bold idea for the construction of a tunnel are so clear; it's an election year and he knows he is the most ineffective congressman to ever be elected to Congress, in the first district!

Do we in the 1st District think that John Larson could actually get such a major project passed? Let's look at how long it took for him to get the National Park Service at the historic Colt Building. He said he had to roll up his sleeves and do the hard work that it takes to get the job done. He said it took 14 years, and that's how Washington works, you see. He couldn't get this simple bill passed on its own merit, so it was stuck in a budget bill with all kinds of pork spending. The problem is he didn't even read his own bill. He had to resubmit another one because yhe forgot to allocate space for the Park Service, at the former Colt building. Even if he was able to get such a massive project built and how many of those jobs would go to the inner-city community? The same community he said has the poorest zip code in the country. I agree with John Larson that the North End of Hartford is poor today, but it was poor yesterday and it was poor 18 years ago thanks to his failed policies.

Let's look at the social security bill he has been working on for over six years. It's basically a tax increase on the few people that are actually still in the workforce. He doesn't have a solution for the 94 million people out of work. His genius idea is to have workers and employers pay more into the system. He is like a snake oil salesman - selling seniors on the promise of a raise. I compare his empty promises to a telemarketer taking advantage of our seniors in order to garner votes. He also said voters are frustrated because elected officials can't come up with solutions. Well, I couldn't agree more. I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for John Larson to bring such a massive tunnel project to Hartford, but it sounds good to voters. He also mentioned what he is going to do in the next Congress if he ends up in the majority, but only if he ends up in the majority. He is basically telling the voters of the 1st District I own this seat and you will vote for me. He has total disregard for the process. He feels he is entitled to it. The 1st District can't wait another two years and hope the environment is right for the John Larson to actually get something of significance done. We will all wait with bated breath to learn who the Hartford Courant will endorse for Congress. Will they endorse John Larson who hasn't passed a major piece of legislation in 18 years, or will they go with a bold new vision?
